County clerks prepare for Thursday's recanvass

KNOTT COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - It has been nearly one week since Governor Matt Bevin filed for a recanvass on the gubernatorial race.

The recanvass is set to begin on Thursday at 9 a.m.

Maurica Cornett, Knott County Clerk, says the Knott County Board of Elections will meet Thursday morning to start the process.

"Me and my board, we have a Republican, Democrat and a sheriff and I’m the chairman that makes our county board of elections," said Cornett. "We will read them off and have two ladies with recap sheets and will be writing them down just like we did on election night. Then after that is over we will recount to see if it all adds up to the same it was on election night."

Cornett says this is something they prepared for.

“We expected it because it was so close."

It is a process she says will not take that long.

“I’m thinking maybe an hour, two hours by the time we go through all of it because I got 20 precincts," said Cornett. “It’s important that we get this right for our governor’s race."

Cornett says the recanvass will only cover the gubernatorial election results.

The Secretary of State's office reports that no member of the Election Integrity Task Force raised any concerns about the 2019 General Election.
