Jury returns recommended sentence in Shannon Gilday murder case

SHELBY COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Update: The jury has recommended a punishment in the Shannon Gilday murder case.

On Thursday afternnon, the jury recommended life in prison without for Gilday as well as an additional 17 years in for his non-murder charges.

Gilday will have a chance for parole after serving 25 years in prison.

A judge will have the final say in what Gilday’s punishment will be.

This is a developing story and will be updated with more information as it become available.

The jury started deliberations Thursday morning for Shannon Gilday’s sentencing in the 2022 murder case at a Madison County home.

Closing statements wrapped up this morning, and the jury will consider if Gilday is to be sentenced to death, will serve life in prison, or receive a more lenient sentence.

During closing statements, the prosecution briefly went over the facts of the case, while the defense took much longer in their closing. Gilday’s attorney Tom Griffiths repeated many times that this was a mental health case.

The judge will make the final decision in sentencing, and that could take several weeks.
