Men arrested after dogs, pigeons found suffering in sweltering U-Haul

(CNN) - Florida authorities said two men were arrested after deputies found two dogs and two pigeons in distress in the back of a sweltering U-Haul box truck.

Deputies were responding to a tip from a passerby.

Deputies said the dogs were found panting heavily and lying in their own urine.

Deputies said a 70-pound pit bull mix was struggling to stand, while an 80-pound English bulldog could not stand at all.

The father and son said they were moving and put the dogs in the cargo box because their other vehicle was too crowded.

Deputies said they also found two pigeons in a sealed storage box with no air holes.

The two men were arrested for animal cruelty and later released on bond.

Meanwhile, the four animals were taken for emergency treatment.

The sheriff warned people not to leave anything with a heartbeat unattended in a vehicle, especially during this heat wave.
