‘Explosive’ diarrhea cases caused by parasite reach 1,700: Here’s how you can stay safe
Parasite linked to contaminated produce and swimming pools has sickened hundreds
(CNN) - Cases of a severe stomach illness caused by a parasite called cyclosporiasis are surging across the country, with more than 30 states reporting infections.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported on Friday at least 843 confirmed cases and more than 1,500 possible cases across 31 states. At least 86 people have been hospitalized.
Symptoms and duration
Symptoms of cyclosporiasis include explosive diarrhea, nausea, abdominal cramping, bloating and fatigue. Unlike many stomach bugs that resolve within 24 to 48 hours, cyclosporiasis can last significantly longer.
“People with this parasite can be sick for weeks or sometimes even months with a sort of relapsing pattern, and so that can really wear down your body,” one epidemiologist at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security said.
Dr. Amesh Adalja of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Center for Health Security said the parasite invades the intestine. “They invade the intestine, causing diarrhea, which can be watery, [and] cause abdominal cramps,” Adalja said.
CNN Health Reporter Jacqueline Howard said the illness can be difficult for those infected. “This can be miserable for people if they do get sick,” Howard said.
How the parasite spreads
The outbreak has been linked to contaminated produce. The parasite has also been found in swimming pools and splash pads, where it can spread through ingested water.
Health officials warn that the parasite is resistant to bleach and can survive in chlorinated pools. Those in areas with an active outbreak are advised to avoid public swimming areas.
How to protect yourself
Health officials recommend washing produce thoroughly, particularly mixed lettuce, fresh basil, cilantro and raspberries. Cooking fruits and vegetables can also help reduce risk.
Adalja cautioned that washing alone may not fully eliminate the parasite. “It won’t completely eliminate it because these are very hardy organisms,” he said.
Anyone who suspects they have the parasite and has been sick for more than 48 hours is advised to see a doctor for treatment.
