PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (WYMT) - Students from the 13th, 14th and 15th Regions are receiving scholarship awards Monday afternoon at the WYMT - Food City Mountain Classic Scholarship Awards Banquet.
The ceremony happened at the Mountain Arts Center in Prestonsburg.
A total of $106,000 was given out at the banquet.
"It's kind of like a graduation ceremony I think in a way that we really want the kids to feel special," said committee member Archie Everage.
Everage said support from the community grows every year.
"It always amazed me to see the outpouring from the community. But you know, only in Eastern Kentucky. It's just Eastern Kentucky is tremendous for standing behind their people," said Everage.
Keynote speaker Kelly Wells talked to students about life goals and how to take those vital steps in achieving their dreams.
"I'm really going to stress to them an action plan on how to put what they really want and how to go after what they really want to try to find the best version of what they look like," said Wells.
Wells said he gets a great feeling when his former student-athletes succeed in life. Likewise, committee members like Everage also get that feeling when giving scholarships.
"The committee has the same feeling when they get calls back and parents tell them like, 'my son or daughter couldn't have went (sic) to college if it wasn't for the scholarship," said Everage.
