CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Charleston scored 24 unanswered points to upend UVa-Wise 24-10 at Ladley Field Saturday afternoon. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Golden Eagles while halting a two-game winning streak for the Cavaliers.
UVa-Wise (3-5, 3-5 MEC) jumped out to an early 10-0 lead behind a 28-yard touchdown reception from Alonzo Brown and a 26-yard field goal by Trevor Owens.
Down two scores late in the first quarter, Charleston (5-3, 5-2 MEC) flipped the script with their special teams play. The Golden Eagles jumped on a muffed punt at the Cavs' 32-yard line.
Five plays later, Charleston got on the board with a field goal off the foot of Kevin Weiman to make the score 10-3. The Golden Eagles then pulled off their second well executed special teams play when Weiman's onside kick was recovered.
Jimmy Wheeler tied the game on a 40-yard touchdown run with 12:45 to play in the half. Charleston took a lead it would not relinquish with 4:31 to play in the second quarter when Mike Strachan hauled in a 22-yard touchdown off the arm of senior quarterback Mason Oslzewski.
The final score of the game came on the opening play from scrimmage in the third quarter when Oslzewski found Gerron Fryer on an 81-yard touchdown connection.
Donavan Montague registered a career-high 14 tackles while Buster Henderson posted 10 stops in defeat. Wheeler posted 148 rushing yards in the win as Charleston posted more than 37 minutes of time of possession.
UVa-Wise will be off next week before returning home to face nationally ranked Notre Dame College on Nov. 3.
