PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- After taking down two top-30 teams on the road, Pikeville men’s basketball was named the NAIA Team of the Week by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, NABC officials announced Tuesday.
UPIKE took down No. 17 Cumberlands (Ky.) on Thursday, handing the Patriots their first official loss at home this season. The Bears held UC to just 32.8 percent shooting and outrebounded the Patriots by 10.
Two days later, Pikeville defeated (RV) Life in overtime. UPIKE held a +19 rebound margin with 13 more offensive rebounds, which led to 16 second chance points.
After averaging 26.5 points and 18 rebounds in those two games, Luke Layhew was named the Mid-South Conference Player of the Week.
The Bears currently sit in second place in the MSC, and will face Lindsey Wilson at home this Thursday at 8 p.m. Then, UPIKE travels to Lebanon, Tenn. to face Cumberland on Saturday at 4 p.m.
