PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - The Pikeville Lady Panthers are gearing up for the Girls' Sweet 16.
It's a special year as the tournament is taking place in Rupp Arena for the first time.
The Lady Panthers are 27-7 as they enter the tournament along with 15 other teams who are excited to take the Rupp Arena court.
Pikeville head coach Kristy Orem says that being able to play in Rupp Arena is an opportunity that she has dreamed of for girls' basketball.
"I've said it all year, I've said it since the time that the KHSAA said that they were finally going to have the girls at Rupp Arena," said Orem. "This is huge, not just for me, or my program but for every girl in the state of Kentucky to be on an equal playing field and to be able to hear their fans up there chanting, Rupp Arena, because we are getting to do the exact same thing that our boys programs are getting to do for years, and I think that that is huge for our kids and our program."
Pikeville takes on the Barren County Trojanettes (31-4) Thursday, March 14 at 12 p.m.
