First responders escort North Laurel girls after winning state championship

LAUREL COUNTY, (WYMT)- The North Laurel girls' middle school basketball team made a buzzer-beating shot to win the state tournament Sunday and returned home in style.

With nine seconds to go and the score 43 to 44, the Lady Jaguars shot and missed. As the family and friends of the players held their breath, the Jaguars were able to keep the ball in their possession and shoot one more time.

This time, the net swished as the basketball dropped through the hoop and the buzzer went off.

North Laurel beat Elkhorn, 45 to 44, to win the state championship. Both teams were undefeated going into the game.

As the Lady Jaguars made their triumphant return home, first responders escorted their bus through downtown London.

Police, fire departments and the rescue squad joined parents, grandparents and other fans to show their support for the girls.
