PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Junior Kayla Mullins layup with 2.8 seconds left proved to be the game winner as UPIKE women’s basketball upset No. 20 Lindsey Wilson on Thursday night, 61-59.
The Bears had to overcome multiple double-digit deficits in the game, including a 16-point deficit in the fourth quarter to win the game.
Lindsey Wilson had a 55-39 lead with nine minutes to go, but the Bears defense stepped up, forcing the Blue Raiders to miss 10 of its last 11 shots, including an 8:50 span where LWC didn’t make a single shot. In that time, UPIKE closed the game on a 22-4 run.
The win snapped a six-game losing streak for UPIKE against Lindsey Wilson, with the last win coming on Jan. 7, 2016 in Pikeville.
UPIKE was once again led by Brianna Burbridge who had 13 points and nine rebounds, both team highs. Mullins and Emily Baker both had 11 points, while Sierra Feltner and Mary Englert each had nine.
The fourth quarter deficit wasn’t the only one that the Bears had to overcome in the game after the Blue Raiders started the game with a 13-0 run. Pikeville then later tied the game at 26 in the second quarter.
The game came in waves for both teams as Lindsey Wilson outscored Pikeville 44-23 in the first and third quarters, while UPIKE outscored LWC 38-15 in the second and fourth quarters.
Pikeville struggled to find any flow to the game early thanks to Lindsey’s dominance on the offensive glass. The Blue Raiders had 20 offensive rebounds in the game to Pikeville’s 11, which resulted in 13 more Lindsey Wilson field goal attempts.
The win moves Pikeville into a tie with the Blue Raiders for third place in the Mid-South Conference at 6-4.
