HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - Similar to the first semifinal, Clay County got off to a fast start and then had to hold off a late push from the Lady Hawks. In the end, the Lady Tigers defeated Pike Central, 80-72 to advance to Saturday's championship game.
Kaylee Mathis scored 18 points in the contest, moving her point total to 2,001 for her high school career in only her junior year. Mathis and the Lady Tigers needed all the points they could get as Pike Central cut the lead all the way down to four in the fourth quarter. Clay County finished the Lady Hawks off at the free throw line.
Clay County moves into the championship game for a rematch with a familiar foe in South Laurel. The Lady Tigers defeated South Laurel last week, 58-54 in the Legacy Nissan Classic.
With the loss, Pike Central moves into the third place game on Saturday, where they will take on Leslie County. That game is scheduled for 3:45 PM.
