Former North Laurel football player dies after kayaking accident

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT/WKYT) - In a Facebook post, officials with the North Laurel High School football team said a former player died.

Zach Abner was in a kayak accident on Saturday and was taken to UK Hospital. Abner was kayaking on Rockcastle River near the I-75 bridge.

Abner later died from his injuries.

Abner graduated from North Laurel in 2014. He graduated from the University of the Cumberlands with a criminal justice degree just weeks ago and planned to become a Kentucky State Police trooper.

"He just always had that smile. If he didn't, you knew something was wrong, but 99% of the day, he had that great smile. He was a talkative person. He loved to talk. Sometimes, you couldn't make him be quiet. You had to make him shut up sometimes," said one of Abner's former coaches. "He was a great leader on the football team. Kids really followed him. I just will never forget the way he looked and his smile that he always had. I mean, it's awful."
