PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- After surpassing preseason expectations, those responsible for UPIKE women’s basketball’s season were honored by their conference on the eve of the MSC Tournament.
Mary Englert took home the conference’s Freshman of the Year award and Second Team All-MSC honors, while senior Emily Baker and sophomore Brianna Burbridge were both named First Team All-MSC.
Englert earned Freshman of the Year after leading the team in scoring at 13.0 points per game. She averaged 3.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game this season, while additionally serving as the team’s primary 3-point specialist, shooting .336 from beyond-the-arc.
Burbridge was tabbed first time after dominating through the conference schedule. She averaged a double-double in MSC play at 19.4 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. Her eight double-doubles this season were the most in the conference.
However, Baker was not far behind with seven double-doubles this season. The senior did just about everything for the Bears this season, leading the team in steals and assists in addition to averaging 9.2 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. She also had the fewest turnovers of all players to play in every game this season.
All three of these athletes helped UPIKE finish in a three-way tie for second in the Mid-South Conference, after being picked to finish fourth by a wide margin. As the No. 3 seed, UPIKE’s first game in the MSC tournament is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Friday against No. 6 seed Georgetown at the East Kentucky Expo Center.
