WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. (WYMT) - It was a big week nine matchup Friday as Williamsburg traveled to Lynn Camp for the Class A District 7 Championship.
"It was amazing," said Head Coach, Jerry Herron Jr. "We talked to some of the kids and they felt like it was some of the biggest crowds they ever played in front of. Talking to Coach (Allen) Harris, he said they had some 2,000 people over there. It was a huge gate. Standing room only. The atmosphere was unbelievable for a regular season game. We have never had that before."
"We just wanted to go in there, play as hard as we could and come out on top with a 'W'," said Player of the Week Dalton Ponder
That's what the Yellow Jackets did, thanks to an outstanding performance from Junior Quarterback, Dalton Ponder. Ponder contributed 599 total yards of offense, seven touchdowns and a two-point conversion in Williamsburg's 72-44 win over Lynn Camp.
"My line blocks great. If it weren't for them I wouldn't be able to do what I do," said Ponder. "My receivers catch the ball amazingly. My running backs block for me and catch the ball when they are supposed to."
While Ponder leads the class in passing yards, some of his teammates are at the top of the class in receiving yards.
When we talked to ponder earlier in the year after just 4 starts, Coach Herron said he wanted to see Ponder grow as a leader, and that has happened.
"He has been a leader on the field off the field, in the locker room. He is doing extremely well in school and in the classroom. We are just excited where he is at. He has turned into a fine young man and the sky is the limit for him."
While Ponder has made strides this season, he will be the first one to tell you he still has a long list of improvements to make. Keep in mind, the Yellow Jackets leader still has one more season at the helm.
