HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - For the first time since 2011, the Clay County Tigers are back in the WYMT Food City Mountain Basketball Classic Championship.
Clay County defeated the No. 3 Knott Central Patriots Friday night, 61-57.
The Patriots held a steady lead following the first quarter of play, but from then on this one stayed close until the end.
With Clay County advancing to the Championship game, it is their first appearance since 2011 when the Tigers defeated the Hazard Bulldogs to claim the 2011 title.
With the Tigers and Panthers meeting in the title game, it is the first match-up featuring the two programs in the Mountain Classic Championship since the teams met in the first two Mountain Classic Championship games in 1988-1989. Clay County won both of those meetings (93-62 in 1988, 70-59 in 1989)
Clay County is seeking its 10th Mountain Classic boys' title.
The Championship game tips off Saturday evening at 8 p.m.
