Clay County falls short of title game in extra innings

LEXINGTON, Ky (WYMT)- After defeating the 2017 State Champions to reach their first final four berth in the KHSAA State Softball tournament, the Clay County Tigers fell to the undefeated Male Bulldogs Saturday in the semifinals.

Brianda Owens, who kept Male scoreless for three innings, scored Clay County's lone run early. The Bulldogs were able to tie the game in the fourth with a runner on third stealing home.

In the 6th inning, the Bulldogs would have a runner on second but Clay County was able to escape heading to the plate for the final time in regulation.

Kelsie Houchens, who took the circle in the 5th, remained perfect giving Male a chance at walking off the game.

Owens, who closed out Friday nights game with the game wining run at the plate in the 7th inning, continued to be clutch as she forced the game to extra innings.

In the 8th, Owens committed a throwing error, putting a runner on second. The Bulldogs would put runners on second and third with no outs. After a throw in the dirt, the runner from third would score ending the game.

Clay County ends the 2019 season with a 36-3 record.
