Appalachian Wireless Roundball Preview: Lawrence County Bulldogs
After a successful regular season last year that saw the Lawrence County Bulldogs finish atop their district, their season was ended abruptly as they were upset by Floyd Central in the first round of the 58th district tournament.
The Bulldogs look to bounce back this year. They only lost one senior from last year's team, and return their three leading scorers in Tyler Maynard (20.6 PPG), Cody Maynard (16.8 PPG) and Chase Sartin (10.3 PPG). The Bulldogs expect to push the tempo even more under first-year head coach Chandler Thompson.
"Whole lot faster. A whole lot faster, more defensive-minded," Tyler Maynard said, a senior wing. "Get up in and pressure people a lot."
"Putting the whole basketball thing aside, their great kids. They come from great families, they got great work ethics, they're great students, great students of the game," Thompson said about his team in his first year." They work extremely hard. So as far as that side of it goes, I've been extremely blessed to step into that opportunity and that role."
The goal for the Bulldogs this year is to get to the East Kentucky Expo Center.
"It hurt a lot to lose last year. I was pretty confident, but you know stuff happens," Senior Forward Chase Sartin said. "It hurt a lot, but we're definitely hungry this year."
"Working together as a team, trusting in our coaches. Losing in the first round of districts last year really left a bad taste in our mouths," Sophomore Point Guard Cody Maynard added. "So trying to get back to that and make a run in region. See what we can do."
