A woman is dead after a house fire in Ashland Saturday afternoon.

Boyd County Coroner Mark Hammond says Dora Brown, 84, from Ashland died when her home in the 2700 block of Montgomery Ave. caught fire around noon.

Brown's nephew, Joshua Pennington, ran into the house to try and save her, but could not breathe or see through the smoke. "That's what I am, that's what I do. I have to help," Pennington said.

Brown's two sons were inside the home when the fire started. They were rescued by two Ashland police officers and were taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Pennington said Brown was a great support system for the family that lived nearby and she left behind great memories. "When we didn't really have one, she offered to sell us our house. That was the best memory of all of them," Pennington said.

Ashland Police Chief Todd Kelley says the two officers were also taken to the hospital for minor smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
