WYMT Food City Golf Classic provides 3 scholarships for Eastern Kentucky Students

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (WYMT) - Pop's Chevorlet took the 2019 WYMT Food City Golf Classic at StoneCrest Golf Course. The winning team shot 22 under par winning the Scramble.

Alice Lloyd College, Food City and Appalachian Wireless tied with 18 strokes under.

Though golfers hit the links for a day of fun, the WYMT Food City Golf Classic is about more than just trying to outscore your opponent.

"The best thing about this whole classic is the scholarships for the kids," says Store Manager of Food City in Prestonsburg Adam Baldridge.

Each year WYMT and Food City team up for the golf classic in memory of former WYMT News Director and anchor Tony Turner, who died after a crash in 2002.

The money raised goes to a scholarship for three students from Eastern Kentucky who have an interest in journalism. This year's recipients are Baylee Turner, Kelby Rose, and Nathaniel Mims.

"I've always wanted to tell stories, I have always been a storyteller, I like to talk obviously," laughed Turner.

Rose and Turner both said that receiving this scholarship is a boost to their confidence before they take the next step in life.

"It gives me the little boost I need to keep working hard," said Rose.

Each student received a $1,000 scholarship to help with college expenses.
