Pike County family visited Notre Dame Cathedral one day before massive fire

(WYMT) - As many across the nation watched as the   historic Notre Dame Cathedral burned, many in Eastern Kentucky who may have been there recalled those memories too.

For a group from Virgie in Pike County, those memories were made Sunday.

"I would have to say it's very mesmerizing, and it was very amazing, and it was like a blessing to be standing in front of it," said Amanda Hamilton.

Hamilton and her family were visiting their cousin Austin Wright, a University of Kentucky student spending a semester in Oxford, England.

"They had their special service there yesterday, some of the locals were telling us about it, it was a special day to them, it was really sad to see the news today," said Hamilton.

The family visited the historic cathedral Sunday evening.

"When you walk up to it, it's very mesmerizing, when you see this giant cathedral with this beautiful detail and architecture," added Austin Wright, who is studying in Oxford this semester. "I can't imagine how the locals must feel after having such an important part of their town destroyed."

The family says they are heartbroken to see the destruction. They are currently back in England.
