University of Kentucky police warn people about phone scam

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WYMT) - The University of Kentucky Police Department is warning people about a new scam.

Here is how the scam works. The caller says they are a UKPD officer and then asks for personal and financial information regarding a warrant for your arrest for buying narcotics online. If you do not cooperate they may threaten you with arrest or even deportation.

UKPD wants to stress this is a scam, even if the number looks legitimate.

They also say you should never give out personal information over the phone.
