12-12-18 Update:
We are learning more about a shooting Tuesday night in Harlan County.

We're told Austin Brown, 20, of Cawood, was the person hit in the eye when shots were fired in the parking lot of Cawood Elementary School.

"It appears that that male individual was at the parking lot, struck by gunfire in the eye," says Trooper Shane Jacobs.

He was taken to the University of Kentucky Medical Center and at last check is in serious condition.

A second victim, a 15 year old girl, was shot in the hip during in the shooting, but was not seriously injured. Police say the girl's parents came and took her home without going to the hospital.

We're told two small buildings owned by the school were damaged by stray gunshots. No students were inside the main school building at the time, but several staff members were. They were not injured. The main building was not hit by the gunfire.

Administration officials say Cawood Elementary was closed Wednesday, but will be open Thursday and Friday, with increased law enforcement presence to ease students' minds.

"We had two primary concerns when we cancelled school. One was to give K-S-P ample opportunity to process the scene. And, the second was to make sure our kids didn't arrive at school today and parents be concerned," says Brent Roark, Harlan County Schools Superintendent.

Officials want to stress this was an isolated incident and not related to the school.

"This was an event that occurred between individuals that live in that community. It did not involve the school. Unfortunately, some of the activities did occur on school property. That is how the school kind of got involved," says Roark.

State Police are still working to identify those involved in the shooting. At this point, no arrests have been made.
