"We had two primary concerns when we cancelled school. One was to give K-S-P ample opportunity to process the scene. And, the second was to make sure our kids didn't arrive at school today and parents be concerned," says Brent Roark, Harlan County Schools Superintendent.
Officials want to stress this was an isolated incident and not related to the school.
"This was an event that occurred between individuals that live in that community. It did not involve the school. Unfortunately, some of the activities did occur on school property. That is how the school kind of got involved," says Roark.
State Police are still working to identify those involved in the shooting. At this point, no arrests have been made.
