BARBOURVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - The Barbourville BBQ Cook-Off and Festival began on Friday morning at the Thompson RV and Recreation Park in Barbourville.
City officials say there were more than 50 contestants on Friday morning representing around 7 or 8 different states.
Officials say they look forward to the event and the food that comes with it every year.
"As mayor, I do use that position to sample lots of different flavors of barbeque this weekend," says Barbourville mayor, David Thompson.
The winnings for all the events total $10,000. $3,000 of that goes to the Grand Champion and $1,500 for the Reserve Grand Champion.
There are also several free concerts over the weekend. Thompson encourages the public to enjoy listening to those while eating their barbeque.
The event is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society and will continue through Saturday night.
Officials say for those attending the concerts you will need to bring your own chairs and blankets.
