Student planning on attending UK dies before high school graduation

ABINGDON, Va. (WKYT) - An 18-year-old from Abingdon, Virginia died in a car crash just hours before his high school graduation. Kirk Nairn planned on attending the University of Kentucky.

Friday night, many mourned during a commencement ceremony.

“Tonight we gather for a time of celebration as we recognize and honor the class of 2019,” announced a commencement speaker. “However, we are also deeply saddened by the untimely passing of two members of this class during their senior year.”

Nairn had earned an ROTC scholarship to UK and was planning on attending in the fall.

WKYT reports that in a statement, UK President Eli Capulito said, in part, "Though he won't be with us in the fall pursuing his commitment to ROTC and his interest in international studies, he and his family always will be part of our Big Blue Nation."

Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday.
