Downey and Gillispie were at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota Tuesday for the transplant procedure.
Downey is a mother of two and the wife of a basketball coach at Northeastern State University in Oklahoma. She found out she was a match to Gillispie in February. The two then met for the first time in late March.
Finally met my kidney recipient last night. What an emotion experience. His kidneys may suck right now but his heart more than compensates for them. So much love in that room last night. pic.twitter.com/fGTznECgD0— Ericka Downey (@D2Diva) March 31, 2018
"I know that I'm led through this process by my faith and if you're doing it for the right reasons, I really feel like all these things will be taken care of," said Downey.
