FLOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT)- Kentucky State Police now tell us the person who died in a Floyd County house fire was an 8-year-old boy named Payton Hylton.
"Well when law enforcement and fire department rescue get to a scene and they're told there's someone inside they naturally step up their game and start an aggressive attack on a fire, and reduce underway, then you find out it's a small child, it hits home on people," said William Petry with KSP Post 13.
Floyd County Schools Superintendent said the child was a 2nd grader at one of their elementary schools. Grief counselors are at the school if teachers or students need them.
It happened around 11 Monday night. Police say the home is located about a mile north of Highway 80 and about a mile south of the Prestonsburg exit on U.S. 23.
Those in the community say this is a time when Floyd County should come together as a whole.
"I just hope that the family can heal and still be okay," said Chelsey Shepherd who lives in the county. "I think that the community should go together and help them."
The boy's father was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor burns.
"Any kind of prayers or anything that people can help with or assist them in, I'm sure this is a crucial time to them," said Petry.
It is still unclear what caused the fire at this time. Arson investigations from KSP Post 9 and 13 are currently investigating.
U.S. 23 was shut down for several hours after the fire but has since re-opened.
