BARBOURVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - On Thanksgiving day, November 28th, 911 dispatchers got a call from a homeowner in Barbourville about an intruder.
The suspect, 37-year-old Emerson Johnson, used a screwdriver to seal himself in a back bedroom and refused to leave.
"They had been in the house for over an hour. They didn't realize he was there," said Eric Martin with Barbourville Police.
Officer Martin and his K-9 Chawby were dispatched.
The homeowner told police he did not know why Johnson chose his home to come into.
When placed under arrest, Johnson attacked Officer Martin and Chawby.
"I'm not sure what his intentions were, me or the dog. He did try kicking me and the dog when we first went in.," said Martin.
Neither Martin nor Chawby were hurt in the encounter. Once Johnson started to kick them, Chawby was told to bite. Chawby bit Johnson on the legs, causing him to surrender.
"The dog bites were on both legs. In training, he's also trained to bite on the arms, too," said Martin.
Johnson has been charged with burglary, assault on an officer and service animal and resisting arrest.
