Sister station WKYT reports the alpaca, named Ringo, had only been with the family for a few months.

Lori Coffey said Ringo was friendly and would pose for pictures.

On Tuesday, Coffey's husband heard gunfire and found Ringo dead.

"I think it's heinous. I can't imagine how a person can take down an innocent animal," said Coffey.

The sheriff's office is investigating. If caught, the shooter may face charges for killing livestock and shooting a gun near a home.
