ELKHORN CITY, Ky. (WYMT) - Mission groups from across the Appalachian region came together Thursday to give shoes and a little hope to kids in Elkhorn City and the surrounding areas.
Two mission groups from North Carolina and one group from Ohio partnered with SCORE International for the 12th annual "Shoes of Hope" event. The groups hosted the event at Elkhorn City Baptist Church.
"All of our volunteer groups that are here this week collect brand new pairs of tennis shoes from their home churches in their home communities," said Appalachian Missions Director Sharon Dees. "And we give these shoes out to children in the community."
Volunteers measure the kids' feet to make sure they get a nice fit and then the kids move on to a different part of the mission.
"Our main purpose, of course, is to be able to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with the community," Dees said.
For that reason, volunteers also wash the kids' feet.
"We are following the example of Jesus and we're washing their feet," Dees said. "And it's just a symbol of humility: that we are here to serve."
Dees says it's all part of a larger mission to help people in their walks- both literal and spiritual.
Thursday's mission served 178 local kids.
