LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - A Laurel County boy walked eight miles on the side of a highway after his grandmother told him to leave, the sheriff said.

Deputies and London City Police officers were called when an 11-year-old boy was found walking by himself early Wednesday morning. He was at a business off South Laurel Road.

Investigators learned that the boy and his grandmother argued at their home off Rita Lane. The grandmother then told the boy to leave, the sheriff said.

The boy walked about eight miles north on US 25 to London.

Deputies said the grandmother made no attempt to find her grandson and did not call 911.

"She should have set him down and put him in time out not asked him to leave the residence," said Gilbert Acciardo with the Laurel County Sheriff's Office.

Patricia A. Rose, 57, of Corbin faces criminal abuse of a child 12 or under and fourth-degree assault. She was taken to the Laurel County Detention Center.

The boy was placed with other family members.
