Senator McConnell made the announcement Tuesday morning on the Senate floor. He said senators may need to work after Christmas for the measure to pass.
McConnell has been reluctant to take up the bill, though several Republicans, including President Trump, have publicly backed the legislation.
Fellow Republican Kentucky Senator Rand Paul responded to Senator McConnell's decision saying, "I applaud Senator McConnell for scheduling this very important vote."
