Sen. Mitch McConnell helps University of Kentucky secure federal grant

WASHINGTON, Ky. (WYMT) - U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced Wednesday the U.S. Department of Energy will invest nearly $2.23 million in federal funding for the University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research (UK CAER).

This grant will be in addition to the $934,554 in federal funding McConnell helped get in 2018.

This money will be used for UK CAER's carbon capture project. This project is aimed to build upon their development of cost-effective, clean coal technologies in Kentucky.

McConnell contacted U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry for the grant application.

“Innovations in clean coal and carbon capture technology are vital to Kentucky’s economic growth, and UK CAER is leading the way toward promoting coal as an affordable and reliable domestic energy source,” said Senator McConnell. “As Senate Majority Leader, I was pleased the U.S. Department of Energy answered my call to recognize the transformative potential of UK’s project. Working with President Eli Capilouto and Director Rodney Andrews, I was proud to support UK CAER’s cutting-edge work to bring these federal resources to the Bluegrass State. These funds can make a profound difference to preserve our environment and this important low-cost energy source in Kentucky.”

“This funding will support the work of Dr. Kunlei Liu and his team in advancing technology to reduce the cost and improve the energy efficiency of carbon capture technology,” said Dr. Rodney Andrews, Director of the University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research. “In this phase of the project, the technology will be advanced toward full-scale demonstration, a necessary step for future deployment of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies. These continued investments by the Department of Energy in CCS are key to allowing for the continued use of low-cost, low-carbon electricity from coal. We appreciate Senator McConnell’s continuing support of UK’s CAER efforts in this area of applied energy research.”
