Safety experts have tips for people enjoying rivers and lakes this Memorial Day weekend
With a man found dead at Carr Creek Lake and a missing kayaker in Pike County, we wanted to talk with safety experts who work in outdoor tourism.
Workers at Hatfield and McCoy River Trails say they take safety seriously and encourage anyone spending Memorial Day weekend on rivers and lakes to do the same.
They say this is a very popular time of year for people to be outside enjoying rivers and lakes.
Workers say the easiest thing anyone can do to protect themselves is to wear a life jacket and a helmet and avoid drinking alcohol.
"If you don't wear a life jacket, then you're taking your own life in your hands", said John Taylor, who works at Hatfield and McCoy River Trails. "If you think you can swim and let's say you get a cramp or something, a life jacket is there to save your life."
Workers say they check multiple factors daily to make sure kayakers stay safe, such as the speed and levels of the rivers.
