MIDDLESBORO, Ky. (WYMT)- Middlesboro has a new Mayor-elect for the first time in eight years.

Rick Nelson, who is currently State Representative for the 87th district will now serve as Middlesboro's new mayor.

Nelson says he plans to focus on restructuring Middlesboro and revitalizing old buildings downtown.

"We are going to have to restructure every department that we have. And, so, I think they will operate better when they do that," says Nelson.

He says switching from State Representative to Mayor will be a change, but he wants to continue to help the people in his area as best he can.

Opponent Bo Green says he agrees with Nelson that the downtown area needs revitalizing as well.

"I hope that he will keep the words that he ran by in his campaign and live up to the promises that he made. And, clean up part of the town, move some of the other town forward with businesses and clean up sidewalks. All of the problems that we have in our city," says Green.

Green says he will continue to be involved in the city of Middlesboro.
