Researchers say suicide rates are high in rural areas

LEXINGTON, Ky (WKYT) - Researchers at the University of Kentucky say in a new study that where you live could affect your mental health.

Factors like unemployment and access to health care are reasons why rural areas have higher suicide rates.

"There's quite a bit of evidence that people who are unemployed and less educated have a greater likelihood of committing suicide," Dr. Ty Borders told WKYT.

Suicide is the eleventh cause of death in Kentucky.
