Our Severe Weather Alert Day coverage continues as winter weather brings rain, snow and wintry mix to the mountains.

Today and Tonight

No matter where you are, today will be a mess of some sort. In areas where the temperatures stayed warm enough to keep the moisture as all rain, it's going to be a soggy mess. Some folks will be close enough to freezing to allow for a wintry mix, which could make some surfaces slick, so be careful, especially on stairs and walkways. In the higher elevations, you'll be greeted with snow and potentially a lot of it.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for a big chunk of our region. The counties closer to the borders run until 1 a.m. Tuesday. Some of the counties further west end at 7 p.m. tonight.

Harlan, Letcher and Wise County, Virginia are under a Winter Storm Warning until 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Our saving grace in most of the lower elevations is the air temperature and the road temperature. We've been saying for almost one week now, when this system first showed up on our radar, pun intended, that even though the models were showing snow, that you have to pay attention to the air temperatures. If you're not at 32 degrees, where water freezes, you're not going to see full-on snow. It's as simple as that.

Rivers and creeks are still running high from this weekend's rain, so be sure to keep an eye on those too.

We'll see a little bit of everything off and on today. Temperatures will be steady throughout the day in the low to mid-30s. The ridges will likely be in the mid to upper 20s.

Tonight, temperatures drop to freezing or below, so any moisture that's leftover will likely be snow at that point. Regardless, take it easy on the roads today and tonight. They will be wet, slick or both.

Extended Forecast

A few flurries could linger into Tuesday morning. I think we'll keep the clouds around for most of the day and into the night, which will keep us right around 40 for a daytime high.

Wednesday and Thursday look sunny and much warmer, with highs in the mid to upper 40s.
