Powell County student among three to receive Ralph Gabbard Broadcast Scholarship

POWELL COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - As the third day of the 32nd WYMT - Food City Mountain Basketball Classic kicks off in Perry County, we introduce our second of three recipeients of the Ralph Gabbard Memorial Broadcast Scholarship.

Kelby Rose, a senior at Powell County High School is heavily involed in both his classroom and community. He's done philanthropy work and is president of the school's Future Business Leaders of America organization.

"I'm president of that club as well as the senior class," said Rose.

He's had his hand in local politics, business and broadcasting, and he's incredibly passionate about all three.

"Broadcasting is definitely on the radar. it's something along with news media that I enjoy very much," he said.

His occasional work in broadcasting has landed him some pretty interesting stories.

"The things we had to cover was a local bicycle theif and that's what this article is about," said Rose, displaying an article him and a classmate wrote up.

Rose said no matter what he does after graduation, he hopes to be able to help his community.

"It's the direct role to change people's lives for the better and I'd say helping people," he added.

He hopes to attend school at Bellarmine Univesity in Louisville.
