Police investigating after man found dead in Whitley County pond
Kentucky State Police in London are investigating after a man was found dead in Whitley County.
Police have identified the man as John T. Smith, 38, of Whitley City. Smith was the subject of a missing person investigation since Sunday, September 17th.
Smith's body was found in a pond on a farm off Cox Smith Lane near Corbin Monday evening. The property owner, Gerald Hart, found the body and called police.
"I thought it was a beaver, killed and floating up," said Hart. "When it was more exposed, you could see arms and legs. You couldn't see the head. Head was under the water."
The pond is very difficult to get to. Hart told us whoever brought the man to the pond, or however he got himself there, they had to go through a lot of thick brush.
Police have not commented on any injuries or trauma to the man's body. The cause and time of death are pending the autopsy results.
"Subject had been there for several days. Right now still early stages of the investigation," said Trooper Lloyd Cochran with Kentucky State Police.
This is not something Hart ever expected to find on his farm.
"Well, if we wouldn't' have found him, most likely he would have gone to the bottom again. Ain't no way been in there dragging the pond for nothing," said Hart.
