Police: Thieves hit same Family Dollar twice in two days

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - A Laurel County store was vandalized and broken into twice between Sunday night and Tuesday morning.

The Family Dollar in the Green Mount community was burglarized after thieves shot out a window. Police believe the vandals then came back a second time the next day.

Police think the first break in happened some time after midnight, possibly around 2:00 or 3:00 Monday morning. The thieves stole an undisclosed amount of money.

The second incident happened on Tuesday morning before the store opened. Someone again used a gun to shoot another window and damaged it. Police are still trying to determine whether anything else was taken during this second crime.

The Family Dollar was closed all day Tuesday while police investigated. People said these crimes are very unusual for the area.

"I have lived here, like I said, since 1971 and we have never had anything like that happen before," said Eddie Sloan, who lives nearby. "It's a very small community. We all know each other, there's never been any crime or anything like that in years."

Police said there was no surveillance video of either incident. They are not sure if one person or a group of people are responsible.

"I really didn't understand why they shot the window out to start with. Vengeance? Or mad about something or something?" Sloan said.

"Well, number one it's unusual for someone to make entry by shooting out the glass of anything. Usually, they take a rock or crowbar or bat or something like that," said Gilbert Acciardo with the Laurel County Sheriff's Office.
