Phelps community joins in memory of Gabbi McCoy
Family and friends gathered in the Phelps High School gymnasium Thursday night to remember the life of Gabbi McCoy.
McCoy died in an accidental shooting Wednesday, sending what community members called a shockwave of emotion into the Phelps area.
People poured into the gym to pray for the McCoy family, share memories about Gabbi, as they mourned together.
Friends say Gabbi would have made fun of the whole event because being "goofy" was just part of her personality.
"She didn't know a sad time," said cousin and long-time friend Cameron Johnson. "She liked to have fun. She liked to goof off. She loved to be with all her friends and family. She was just a fun person."
He said the community already feels her absence.
"Everybody in the community, they're gonna miss Gabbi. She's a big part of the girls' basketball team. She just had a big impact on everybody," Johnson said.
He said she's not someone who will be forgotten.
"If you met her, you remembered her smile, you remembered her laugh; you just remembered everything about her," he said.
