HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - A grand jury indicted a Hazard man on charges of wanton endangerment and assault.

According to court documents, Joey D. Ritchie put his bare hands in food he knew was being prepared at Captain D's for Hazard City Assistant Police Chief Joe Engle.

Ritchie is also accused of using a "dangerous instrument" and ungloved hands to handle rice and bring it to his mouth. He then let the rice in his mouth fall back into the rest of the rice, according to court documents.

Officials say Ritchie knew the rice was to be served to Engle, and that he knew Engle was a police officer.

Authorities say Ritchie knowingly created a danger of death or serious physical injury to Engle.

Ritchie faces charges of first-degree wanton endangerment of a police officer and third-degree assault.
