New docu-series on Cordia basketball streaming online now for free
A 10-episode docu-series by UPROXX, "Us Against the World," takes a look at the Cordia basketball team during Rodrick Rhodes's stint as the team's head coach.
"When a black coach takes control of a high school basketball team in rural Kentucky, heads turn. When he wins, heads roll," reads the description of the series' trailer on YouTube.
In 2014, during Rhodes' tenure as coach, Cordia was hammered with penalties from the Kentucky High School Athletic Association for a host of rules violations, including falsifying records, allowing staff members to lease housing to the family of a student-athlete without ever receiving payment, paying students' moving expenses and more.
School officials ended up appealing the sanctions and receiving fewer penalties, but the team was ultimately banned from postseason play for two years and the school's athletic program was placed on probation.
In an interview with WYMT Director of Lotts Creek Community School Alice Whitaker said she does not think it is race that is the issue, she thinks it is the product on the court people take exception to.
"As far as I'm concerned racism was less of an issue than basketball," said Whitaker. "No big deal for us around here having won that championship. Basketball there again, I truly do think more than racism."
