GRAYS KNOB, Ky. (WYMT) - A new class of cadets will soon begin the program at the Appalachian Challenge Academy.
The National Guard founded the youth challenge program. Students go through physical training, are taught in classrooms, and receive guidance from teachers and trained staff.
All students come to the center voluntarily. Administrators describe the program as a second chance for at-risk youth.
"We can nurture them, we can them tools for academic success, and we can give them tools that will change their lives," said Appalachian Challenge Academy Assistant Director Colby French.
The academy is in Grays Knob in Harlan County. Ages 16 to 18 can join. The next class starts on July 15.
