(WYMT) - An independent film telling the story of Appalachian coal miners trapped underground after a methane explosion opens this weekend.
The film "Mine 9", directed, written and produced by Eddie Mensore, centers around nine miners with only a one-hour supply of oxygen and their struggle to escape alive.
The thriller opens on limited screens, but will show in Hazard, Harlan and Pikeville. The Herald-Leader reports the movie will also debut in West Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia.
The movie is not based on a particular event, but the characters are based on miners Mensore knew.
Part of the movie was filmed at a mine in Buchanan County, Virginia. Other parts were filmed on a set in Atlanta.
