Mayor of Middlesboro, Rick Nelson, says the city recently received a grant from the State of Kentucky to make renovations to the Fords Woods Park.

Nelson says earlier in the year the city applied for a grant to get a poured-in-place rubber surface for the playground.

He says the material is a 2 to 3-inch rubber surface that will go under the playground area.

"I know we've got a lot of needs for our playgrounds and things, but we've got to start somewhere. And, we are not going to turn our grant down. We are going to go with it and try to enhance our playgrounds," says Mayor of Middlesboro, Rick Nelson.

Nelson says this is the first step in making the parks in Middlesboro safer.

He says the cost of the material for the park is around $70,000.
