LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - The Laurel County Sheriff's Office arrested 46-year-old Walter Earl Darling Monday afternoon after months of investigation.

"I think Laurel Countians can feel a little bit safer now knowing we have this guy behind bars," said Public Affairs Deputy Gilbert Acciardo.

Police say Darling used his own personal car with emergency lights to pull over a woman driving a car on Highway 192 on the night of September 4, 2019.

Darling is accused of forcing the woman to drive him to an unknown location in Laurel County and tried to sexually assault her.

"The passenger in that vehicle gets out, comes up to her vehicle armed with a knife of some sort," said Acciardo.

The woman was able to get away from Darling and call 911.

In December, Darling was identified in a photo lineup and admitted to investigators that he committed to the crimes that night, deputies said.

"We brought him in, questioned him, and he gave us a confession," said Acciardo.

Darling is charged with attempted rape, attempted sodomy, unlawful imprisonment and impersonating a peace officer. He is at the Laurel County Correctional Center with a cash bond of $100,000.

More arrests in this case are expected.
