Local police warn of recent scam targeting families

HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - The Hazard Police Department is warning local families of a recent scam that is still going around.

Officers said a man named Dan Jones calls from the number (604) 902-4973.

He is apparently telling people that a family member is in a Florida jail and needs money sent to get him out.

The scammer then tells them to go to Walmart and buy prepaid debit cards and send him the information on the cards.

If you are contacted by this man or anyone else with a similar story, don't do what they ask. It is a scam.

A common red flag indicating a scam is if the caller asks for any type of prepaid debit card or gift card. Banks, jails, police stations and other legitimate organizations will never ask for payment in these forms.
