Several families took part in a celebration of reading Saturday at the Perry County Park.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony dedicated the Perry County Christmas Storywalk.

Kids young and old were invited to read pages from "The Night Before Christmas" displayed along the walking path.

Local children's author Nancy Kelly Allen read "The Polar Express."

Kids could also meet Santa and receive a free book.

"We're expressing how important it is to learn to read, and reading is knowledge and knowledge is power, and we're trying to teach that to kids early," said Perry County Judge Executive Scott Alexander.

The event was sponsored by Save the Children, the Perry County Fiscal Court and the Perry County Literacy Council, and made possible by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

County officials say they hope to hold several story walks throughout the year.
