WASHINGTON (WYMT/LOUISVILLE COURIER JOURNAL) - A Kentucky woman with ties to the mountains is one step closer to being the next U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
The Louisville Courier-Journal reports the Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted 15-7 to move Kelly Knight Craft's nomination forward on Thursday.
Craft, who is from Glasgow, is married to coal baron Joe Craft, CEO of Alliance Resource Partners, who is originally from Hazard.
President Trump nominated Craft for the post at the urging Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
Senator McConnell tweeted her nomination now goes to the full Senate for a confirmation vote.
