The winner takes on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

The Kentucky Republican Party filed a complaint with the FEC, accusing Jones of violating regulations by accepting campaign contributions from corporations.

#FreeMattJones trended on Twitter and Matt Jones posted a periscope video to Twitter on the topic.

"I'd talk to some folks about announcing on Thursday that I wasn't going to run. I'd kind of made that decision that if Bevin won that i wasn't going to do it. and if he lost, I was going to spend a few days thinking about it. But now, they've given me more to think about because I've gotten to see the support that's out there," said Jones.

As of now, former Marine Amy McGrath is the only Democrat to formally announce a run for US Senate next year.
